Hip Hop As Discipleship And Mission

Who in the heck does Ben White think he is? He grew up in the suburbs, he plays guitar, bass, and drums. He sings. He’s a songwriter. He is a rock and roller. He is a pastor. He can’t dance. He’s married to a partially Native American, but mostly white, woman. He is at least 99% caucasian according to his ancestry DNA. He thinks he can be a part of some sort of hip hop scene in Akron, Ohio? He thinks he can preach and lead a church in such a way to bring both black and white people together in an urban setting? What an idiot. Why doesn’t he just stay in his lane?

I’m writing this above paragraph to provoke you, because some of you have thought these exact thoughts about me. You’re busted.

And I can’t blame you. It’s ridiculous that a white, suburban reared, 43 year old male pastor would have the audacity to act like he’s a hip hopper. When I step outside of myself I think it’s just as crazy as you do, maybe more. But I believe in a God who is crazy. And He’s way more audacious than you and me.
